Welcoming Freshmen August 2024
Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle
A Welcome From Our Founding President
Welcome to Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle High School!
How thrilling to launch our new school with the support of so many local leaders, with the Holy Spirit guiding our way. The young people of south Seattle deserve an accessible, Jesuit, Catholic, college-prep school. We plan to provide a top-notch academic experience, coupled with four years of professional work experience, enabling our students to flourish as scholars and citizens.
For Jennifer and me, CRJS feels like a homecoming. We met in Seattle in 1987 while I was attending UW, and were married in Bellevue in 1989. Our son Conor (29) is a smokejumper at the Winthrop, WA US Forest Service base; our daughter Molly (26) graduated from Seattle University in 2019 with a degree in Nursing. Our Washington roots run deep.
Inspired by the Jesuits and the superb teachers at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, IL, I began teaching in Spokane at the age of 21. From 1989-1994, I taught at Fairfield Prep, a Jesuit high school in Connecticut. From 1994-2022, I worked at Jesuit High in Portland, first as a teacher, then as Academic Vice Principal, and from 2012-December of 2021 as Principal.
In 2022, after witnessing the devastating impact of COVID, social and academic upheaval, and economic dislocation on young people, I managed a new nonprofit called SetPath, which guides young adults to discover purpose, hope, and direction through life-planning and mentorship, free of charge. During the past year, I recognized anew that in my heart, I am an Ignatian educator with a desire to help underserved young people to experience the joys of a Jesuit, Catholic, Cristo Rey education, and thus achieve their potential.
Our team is eager to work with you to introduce a new generation of students to the 475-year Jesuit tradition of excellence in education in south Seattle. We intend to create a vibrant, thriving Cristo Rey community that will serve as a “city on the hill” for Seattle, the Northwest, and the nation. Thanks so much for accompanying us on this exciting journey, which will transform the lives of so many young people, making Seattle a more just, equitable, and joyful city.
In Christ’s name,
Paul J. Hogan, President
