Dear Families,

We’ve officially wrapped up our inaugural year at Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle—and what a year it has been! With your partnership and support, we’ve made history and laid a strong foundation for years to come. Here are just a few highlights from this unforgettable first year:

  • Achieved the highest 9th/10th grade PSAT average in the Cristo Rey Network (863)—surpassing both the Washington State and U.S. averages
  • Hosted our first Homecoming Week, Dance, and Spring Formal
  • Reached our highest time card average of 3.9 this week
  • Held our first-ever Tie Ceremony
  • Organized joyful assemblies, student vs. staff basketball and volleyball games
  • Gathered as a community for our Fall BBQ and Fall Feast
  • Embarked on two college visits
  • Maintained a cell phone-free environment all year
  • Six students selected for the Caddie Academy, opening doors to apply for the prestigious Evans Scholarship
  • 80% of students made the Honor Roll in the first semester

And the best part? You were right there with us—helping decorate for dances, showing up at Coffee & Chats, attending conferences, cheering on your children, and supporting our admissions efforts.

Thank you for walking alongside us in this journey. Thank you for believing in your children, in us, and in the mission of Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle. This first year has been unforgettable—and we’re just getting started.

With joyful hearts and deep gratitude,

The Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle Team

Summer Expectations for 10th Graders: College Visits & Reading
As students prepare for the upcoming school year, Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle (CRJS) encourages all 10th graders to make the most of their summer by exploring future college options and engaging in a variety of reading. These activities will help broaden their horizons and better prepare them for success in high school and beyond.
College Visits:
It is highly recommended that students visit a range of colleges to gain a deeper understanding of the opportunities available to them. This summer, students should aim to visit:
  • State Schools: These institutions offer large campuses with a wide range of academic programs, strong research opportunities, and diverse communities.
  • Private Liberal Arts Colleges: These colleges emphasize a well-rounded education with small class sizes and close student-faculty relationships.
  • Research Universities: Students will experience vibrant, academically challenging environments at universities known for cutting-edge research across various disciplines.
Reading:
Summer reading plays an important role in building critical thinking skills and preparing students for future academic success. Students are encouraged to engage in a broad mix of reading materials:
  • Fiction & Nonfiction: Choose novels and stories that broaden perspectives and expand knowledge.
  • Poetry: Explore works by classic and modern poets, particularly those likely seen on the SAT. The Digital SAT has two sections:
    • The Reading and Writing section
    • The Math section
The Reading and Writing section covers poetry, and it is divided into two modules, each with 25 operational questions and two pretest questions. To prepare for poetry questions on the SAT, students should focus on two key actions: actively reading poetry and strategically practicing. Familiarity with poetry can reduce anxiety, so committing to reading more poetry, especially the types of poems likely to appear on the SAT, will help students build confidence.
The poems you are most likely to encounter on the SAT include works by both classic and modern poets, many from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Some key texts (fiction, non-fiction, and poetry include:
  • Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
  • Go Tell It on the Mountain by James Baldwin
  • The Awakening by Kate Chopin
  • Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass
  • Selected Essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
  • 1984 by George Orwell
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
  • Walden by Henry David Thoreau
  • Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman
  • The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros
  • Cane by Jean Toomer
  • Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell
  • Into Thin Air- John Krakauer
  • Into The Wild – John Krakauer
By visiting colleges and engaging with a range of reading materials, students will be better prepared for the next steps in their academic journey.
