Student Journalism in Action: Winston N. ‘29 at the University of Washington College of Education

The University of Washington team at Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle’s 2025 Draft Day celebration

Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle students gain real-world professional experience through our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) by contributing meaningful work to mission-aligned partner organizations. One powerful example is Winston N. ’29, whose journalism and storytelling for the University of Washington College of Education amplify educators’ voices while helping him grow into a confident young writer. Through his work on UW’s Get to Know Our EduDawgs blog series, Winston is learning how professional writing can influence understanding and connect communities.

Highlighting Student Journalism Through Corporate Work Study

Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle’s Corporate Work Study Program places students in professional environments where their work matters. Through CWSP, students build workplace skills, explore career interests, and contribute to organizations that serve the greater good, all while earning to support their education.

The CWSP offers unique benefits to both students and partners. For example, journalism and storytelling play a vital role in education. They preserve institutional history, highlight lived experiences, and connect communities through shared stories. Likewise, the opportunity to publish professionally helps Winston prepare for success in college and career.

Meet Winston

Winston is a curious ninth-grader with a bright smile and a deep love of learning. As a member of the Class of 2029, he brings thoughtful energy and enthusiasm to everything he does, especially his writing.

Through his CWSP placement at the University of Washington College of Education, Winston discovered how journalism allows him to explore people’s stories while strengthening his communication skills. Writing matters to Winston because it helps him listen carefully, ask meaningful questions, and share work that is both accurate and engaging.

This experience has helped Winston imagine a future where his curiosity and creativity can grow into a career rooted in connection, education, or media; fields where storytelling makes a real difference.

Working at the University of Washington College of Education

As part of the University of Washington College of Education team, Winston contributes to the Get to Know Our EduDawgs blog series. His role includes researching alums and educators, drafting profiles, and supporting digital storytelling efforts for podcasts and written features.

Publishing work within a higher education setting is a powerful opportunity for a high school student. Winston is held to professional standards of clarity, accuracy, and tone, learning firsthand what it means to write for a broad academic audience. His work represents the kind of authentic partnerships CWSP fosters.

What His Supervisor Says

Winston’s CWSP supervisor at the University of Washington College of Education has shared that he consistently demonstrates professionalism, curiosity, and a willingness to learn. His attention to detail, respectful communication, and growing confidence as a writer have made him a valued member of the team. Over time, Winston has shown noticeable growth in both his writing skills and his ability to take initiative in a professional setting.

Preparing Students for College, Career, and Purpose

Winston’s journey reflects Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle’s commitment to forming graduates who are confident, professional, and purpose-driven. Through CWSP, students prepare for college by contributing meaningfully to the world around them.
