Draft Day Marks a New Chapter at CRJS

Draft Day Marks a New Chapter at CRJS

On Wednesday, August 28, CRJS hosted its first-ever Draft Day - a milestone event marking a pivotal moment in the academic and professional journeys of our students. Held at Seattle University’s Pigott Auditorium, Draft Day brought together students, families, corporate partners, and members of the CRJS community to unveil work-study placements for the year ahead. Draft Day marks the official beginning of a unique partnership between our students and their corporate mentors, who will guide them through real-world professional experiences while providing invaluable skills and mentorship.

Throughout the event, we reflected on the core mission of CRJS and the critical role the CWS program plays in preparing our students for the future. The CWS program bridges the gap between classroom learning and practical experience, with students working five days each month in industries including finance, tech, healthcare, and more. Not only does this hands-on approach offset the cost of their education, but it equips students with essential professional skills to prepare them for success in college and careers.

The moment everyone was waiting for came as students were called to the stage, one by one, to learn which company they would work for this year.

The joy and excitement were contagious, and it was a proud moment for all in attendance. Our corporate partners, including industry leaders like Costco, Alaska Airlines, Microsoft, PACCAR, Providence, Premera, and T-Mobile, among others, were just as eager to meet the students they will be mentoring and supporting.

Following the program, attendees moved to the PACCAR Atrium for a reception and took photos next to the Kenworth truck parked outside. The atrium buzzed with conversation as students and corporate partners talked about their work-study placements, their excitement for the year ahead, and their long-term goals.

The impact of Draft Day extends beyond the event. One parent reflected on how their child has been nurtured with a strong foundation in financial literacy and the importance of generational wealth from a young age. The Corporate Work Study program not only provides students with professional experience but also aligns with their own families’ efforts to prepare for long-term success and financial stability.

Many of our corporate partners shared how impressed they were with the ambition and drive of our students, while students voiced their excitement about the chance to gain hands-on experience in professional settings. This shared enthusiasm set the tone for the year ahead, where students will learn about real-world challenges and contribute to their new workplace.

None of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of our corporate partners and the broader CRJS community. We are grateful to Seattle University for sponsoring our inaugural Draft Day event. Their generosity and commitment to our students reflect the strength of our Jesuit community and the shared belief in providing young people with the tools they need to succeed.

A special thank you to all the corporate partners who have joined us in our mission to empower students through the Corporate Work Study program. Your support makes a tangible and transformative difference in the lives of our students.

We are also incredibly proud of our students, whose hard work, resilience, and enthusiasm are inspiring. This year’s work placements are just the beginning of a journey that will shape their futures, and we cannot wait to see all that they will accomplish.
