Faith in Action: World Day of Justice
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day, Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle celebrated its first annual “World Day of Justice Interfaith Prayer Service” on Friday, January 17. Four speakers, each representing a faith perspective present at Cristo Rey, reflected on the impact of Dr. King’s life and his call to live a faith that does justice.
- Annarose Jowenson, Campus Minister for Social Justice at Seattle University
- Fr. Aregawi, Ethiopian Orthodox Priest
- Dr. Tali Hairston, Director of Community Organizing, Advocacy, and Development at Seattle Presbytery
- Tarek Dawoud, Chair of the Interfaith and Outreach Committee of the Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS)
- Samuel Carlson, Campus Minister, Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle High School
Students particularly appreciated the inclusive nature of the event, and the ability to get a deeper understanding of others traditions' perspectives on faith. Biology teacher Dr. Yaiyr Astudillo-Scalia said about Dr. Hairston, “I really like the way he led the students in thinking about how to create joy for other people. It’s something anyone of any age can do.”
The Second Vatican Council called on all Catholics to “promote the spiritual and moral goods found in other religions.” Jesuit works like CRJS have made this work a priority in the 21st century. It was truly a joy to see our universal mission of reconciliation and justice come to life on the World Day of Justice at Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle.
