Shea Homes Donor Spotlight
Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle is honored to be the recipients of a grant from Shea Homes. Their dedication to our future students and community is a testament to their generosity and faith in our program. We are so grateful for their partnership and philanthropic support in our founding year.
Shea Homes is part of the Shea Company which has a long history on the west coast including building the Golden Gate Bridge and the Hoover Dam. Since its inception in Portland, OR in 1881 by John Shea, the company's activities include commercial construction, civil engineering, commercial and multi-family property development and management, new home construction, and venture capital.
Dedicated to supporting Catholic education and giving back to their communities, Shea Homes has concentrated on providing access and a better education for low-income and underserved communities.
Involvement in projects like CRJS is vital to the identity and culture of the organization. Their motto is ‘live the difference’ which they do by participating, supporting, and interacting with their local communities. Their support for Cristo Rey schools on the west coast dates back almost two decades.
After learning a new Cristo Rey school was opening in Seattle, Dan O’Melveny and Mark Gray toured the campus this fall to better understand the needs of the school and the future plans for the campus. Dan, the executive director of Shea Family Charities, shared, “In working with Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle, Shea Homes is proud to help improve and update spaces in the school as they prepare to welcome their first class of grade 9 students this fall. Our work is intended to honor Catholic school education and to ultimately serve more students and families. We are pleased to support the opening of a new Cristo Rey school in the Pacific Northwest."
This grant will help update the campus for future CRJS students and includes modernizing technology and classrooms.
While the bones of the former school are solid, the grant will help update technical systems to provide the educational tools required to meet twenty-first century expectations. It also will provide a new bathroom for faculty and lighting in the portable classrooms.
President Paul Hogan said, “We are deeply grateful to Shea Homes for their remarkable generosity to Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle. Their grant will enable our new school to open with state-of-the-art technology infrastructure. On behalf of our future students and staff, we say thank you! to the Shea family who have done so much for so long for deserving Catholic schools around the US.”
CRJS is committed to delivering a rigorous educational experience to students who, through no fault of their own, have had inconsistent exposure to high quality instruction. They are also students who are underrepresented at institutions where the academic focus and expectation is on preparation for college and beyond. Technology is key to achieving this goal.
