The Doug Mabie “Do Better” Award is Cristo Rey’s only endowed award. The honor comes with a scholarship to help the recipient’s family with tuition. The Award is presented to a sophomore who exemplifies the inspiring qualities of Doug Mabie and the core values of CRJS, a community-builder who encourages classmates to “Do Better” as they seek to flourish as scholars and citizens.
This year's winner of the Doug Mabie Award is a person-for-others who brings joy, promotes teamwork, and serves as a courageous voice for those not able to advocate for themselves: Vanessa A-M.!

At this fall’s CRJS Honors Convocation, Cristo Rey President Paul Hogan shared with students Annie Mabie’s description of her remarkable husband in this presentation:
“Doug’s mission in life was to ‘Do Better.’ Whenever he saw people facing challenges, Doug always asked, ‘What more can we do to help?’ His primary focus in life was helping improve the lives of our youth.
26 years ago, Doug established the Springboard Foundation, whose mission is to improve the lives of children living in under-resourced schools in Chicago. Doug invited his friends to join him, and over the past quarter-century, the Springboard Foundation has made a huge, positive difference for thousands of teens in Chicago.
With heartfelt thanks, the Mabie family celebrates the “Doug Mabie ‘Do Better’ Award at Cristo Rey.” Students, Doug would say this to you: ‘Be kind to one another; ask how you can help others; and always respect your teachers, friends and family. In addition to your own hard work, they are the source of your success.’”

Doug's Legacy at Baird and Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle
Shortly before his untimely death in September of 2024, Doug helped his lifelong friend Paul Hogan navigate an application for the Paul Purcell “Kids Win” Award from RW Baird, Doug’s employer. In April of 2025, Baird awarded CRJS one of its largest “Kids Win” grants of $100,000 toward Cristo Rey Jesuit Seattle's new academic center. See this video from Baird for a moving glimpse of Baird’s commitment both to Cristo Rey schools and to Springboard Foundation, which Doug founded in 1998.
